lace!

I would like to sew a lace jacket and I'd like to wear it more than once in a blue moon.  So ... I am looking for inspiration!  I need guidance!  I need advice!
Here is a dark blue (photographed in poor lighting with a cell phone, but you get the idea)
Here is the same thing in red:

And here is a gorgeous, gorgeous brown but it is rather dressy.  The sequins sparkle :)
Or should I get a ticket for the Bolt Bus and zip up to New York?
Maybe I should call around stores in New York?
What to do???

  1. I don't have a lot of advice, Robin, but I sympathize! I have a piece lace that I've been mulling over for awhile. I also have been thinking of a jacket but, like you, I want it to be wearable and not just for "fancy." I haven't figured it out yet. I will watch your progress with interest. :D

  2. I wouldn't know what to recommend, but I must say that the third, brown lace is stunning! A trip to NYC sounds fun too.

  3. There has been a model in a Burda from 2008:

  5. Those lace pieces are gorgeous. What if you underline it, which would give the lace stability. Not sure if its doable... What about using silk organza.

  6. Personally, I don't think any of the laces pictured are doing what you want. Since the original calls for Guipure lace I say that you should come to NYC and buy guipure lace. I'm sure you will be so much happier with the jacket than if you go second best.

Plus I haven't seen you in a minute and it would be nice to meet up! :)

  7. I say head up to NYC so we can meet up at Lace Star to help you pick out the guipure lace!

  8. I think the brown lace is soooo pretty. I would love to have it, but I know it isn't what you are looking for. If you are going to choose from these, I'd choose the blue. It would go with more colors.

  10. Oops, the link doesn´t lead you to the jacket i suggested.
You´ll have to search for Burda 1/2008 nr. 126

  15. The answer is always to go to NYC, of course!

On a possibly more helpful note, my navy lace over navy wool skirt is one of my more successful projects ever in terms of versatility. I wear it all the time, winter and summer. Because it's tone-on-tone it's perfectly wearable for day, not too dressy or "fancy." So if you're looking for a versatile, every day piece, I recommend the tone-on-tone in a dark color, probably navy or gray (black can be too dressy).
